Does Linux have to be installed on the Active primary partition or can it be installed on a logical partition? This is my first time so I'm kinda lost, even with the user manual (go figure). I'm sure this will be the first (actually, this is already my second) in a flurry of posts so please be patient with me.

I'm new to Linux myself, but it does not have to be installed on a primary partition, set active (I think),I've installed Linux in both primary and logical partitions and they boot just fine. However someone correct me if I'm wrong

I'm also new at this. I beleive if you're planning on using a dual boot, it's better to put it on a logical partition and not the active primary partition. If you do this (as I found out) you can lose your Windows. Stay away from MBR when installing LILO or else... scandisk will report errors, Partition Magic won't be able to help..... Format and start from scratch. That was my lesson.

Bah. Installing LILO in the MBR is not a fatal error, although occasionally it may casue problems, more likely than not you will notice no differences, other than a warning from your antivirus that the MBR has changed if you boot into Winders. If you get the warning, then, tell the AV proggie that this was known and expected, and you're golden. If you find you hate LILO (which is hard to do, Gawd it's so cuddly!), you can always fdisk /mbr and get it over with. Either way, make a copy of LILO on a boot disk just in case something happens.

Question 3Com PCMCIA card not working...
I am totally new to Linux and just actually finished my install of RedHat Linux 7.0. The only thing that isn't working right now that I care about is my PCMCIA network card. It's a 3Com Megahertz 10/100 LAN CardBus PC Card (3CCFE575CT). I'm a Windows buff but can't figure out what to do about this. I know there's the possibility that this card won't work under Linux so I'm willing to go with that if it's a fact, but if not I could use some help. I have no idea where to start to get it working. Any help would be very appreciated.

I'm not certain if that is a supported piece of hardware or not. How are you testing it? Trying loopback through 127.0.0.1? Or are you trying to communicate with another machine via ping? And is it configured as eth0 (run ifconfig and see what'cha got )? Find out if it is supported, and, provided it is, if you can't get it to respond, skate out to http://www.linuxdocs.org and check the networking documentation. Red Hat's site may also have documentation, not sure. SuSE
