writing table partitions in Gentoo
I'm wanting to enter into the world of linux and have picked gentoo to start with, things started ok until I used the fdisk tool and it gave me this message:

You will not be able to write the partition table.
Note: Sector size is 2048 (not 512).
Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disc label.
Building a new DOS disc label. Changes will be made in memory only,
until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous content won't be recoverable.

Warning: Invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite)

It is also only shows 411Mbs and the HDD is 12 gig... thanks to anyone who takes the time to look and my thread.

Chris

where did you get the HD from? What kind of HD is it? It needs to be low level formatted.

It's a Quantum Bigfoot that I pulled out of an HP, they are all scrap parts for that matter, lol. Funny you should say low level format, I was just saying that I might try that to a friend at work, would you know a good program I could use that would boot off a floppy? thank you very much for your time.

BIgfoot is an old drive. Is this an IDE drive? Did the HP run Windows or some other OS?

I haven't low level formatted an IDE drive in many years. I do believe the bigfoot could be low level formatted (many later IDE drives can't be low level formatted) but I would have to research it to figure out how. Maxtor bought quantum; you might search their site for a tool.

it is an IDE drive and an older one at that, also it was running windows at some point. Thanks for the tips I'll go ahead and look around on the maxtor website and maybe a few others.

If you have any questions about installing gentoo (docs are great but backup can always help ) feel free to ask.

If this is your first foray into Linux, I would suggest NOT using Gentoo.
I run it myself, but it can be quite confusing for people without any Linux experience.

I would suggest starting with something like www.pclinuxos.com
