ok, here is the damage, and i would apreciate ideas on the best way to fix it:

the inital setup:
19Gb HD, 2 partitions: 17GB Ext3 with fedora core 4 on it, and 2GB lixus swap.

the change:
i needed to have windows on the machine for a project, and so i booted from the winXP cd, formated the 2GB swap partition into an NTFS one, and installed linux in it.
the 17GB partition remained untouched.
during installation, it asked me to make the 2GB the active partition.

the problem:
i need to go back to my linux installation.
i cannot find a way to make the 17GB partition the active one again.
and how do i reformat the swap partition, can i do it after linux loads or its sudden disapearance will crash the kernel as it loads?
do i need to setup the loader again (what is it called, grubb?) or is it still there.
the computer boots into windows directly now

i can just repartition and reinstall, but it would be nice if there is an easier fix.

boot with a dos floppy and run fdisk to set the active boot partition. Might be you can do this in BIOS too; depends. If you have SCSI drives you certainly can.

Your linux won't crash without swap. It will just disable swapping.
