Question on remote desktop in Linux (SuSe)
I have converted most of my home computing to Linux. Specifically SuSe version 10 which I have installed on one desktop and one laptop system. I would like to access the desktop system in my radio room with my laptop from my living room. There are programs built into SuSe to accomplish this however they require that someone be at both systems to initiate the connection. I have done a general check of the help files and RTFM'ed but I can't seem to find a way to connect to the system upstairs without anyone being at the console. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Well, you never explained what application you are using to do the remote connection? Wouldn't this be better in the dedication Unix/Linux forum we have? You can have a moderator move this thread to that forum.

Greetings. I just joined the forums yesterday and after looking over the categories thought the Unix/Linux section was for questions on the operating system itself. It this thread would be better there I would have no objection to moving it.

I am using the applications that are built into the SuSe 10 distribution. Remote Desktop Connect (Krdc) as the client side and Desktop Sharing (Krfb) on the other end. I apologize for not thinking about the fact that I could be using any one of a number of desktop shell environments. I have tried Gnome and KDE both and for the time being have settled in on KDE. Thanks much for taking the time to reply to my message.

I don't know either of those applications. I would look into using a VNC application or FreeNX.

I think VNC sounds like what you need, it works for me here.

you should be able to do so by configuring the target's Desktop Sharing menu (radio room computer) with the following settings:

Allow uninvited connections
Allow uninvited connections to control desktop

and set the password. This is the password you use to get authorization.

Oh.. and to clarify.. Desktop Sharing is SuSe's VNC tool.

I don't use SuSe anymore, so I didn't realize they used VNC. Makes sense, it's a free utility.
