Unhappy Any hope that Linux will get a decent FileManager?
I'm fairly adept at windows, and thought I'd try Linux, but have been dissapointed so far. The file manager is the heart and most important part of an OS, and it seems near worthless in linux. No way to reach another partition! No way to reach another drive! Much less another computer! I've read that linux doesn't even have the the capability to assign letters or names to drives and partitons, so you are forever after stuck in the partition you booted in. okay for beginners, but worthless to people with advanced systems (I have 30+ partitions, non various drives). I goggled for days for a workaround, but found none. Gnome is even worse than kde, with no tree view, so you can only see one folder per window!!!!! So, I join this forum to see if anyone knows a fix for linux. In the meantime, my frustration has given me a new respect for windows.

KDE has a file manager with a tree view that blows Windows away.
I found that out on my first install, day one.

Have you thought about reading the documentation, it might help.

I don't know what you've tried, but typing the name of the partition into the file manager and hitting Enter will get you there.

No way to reach another drive!
Again, type the name of the drive into the file manager and hit Enter.

There are a dozen ways to do this in Linux.

I'm not sure where you read that but its not true.

If you went to Google and searched for Gnome Tree View, you would see that it definitely has one.

i think you should put you r brain in gear before you put your keyboard in action......there are several ways to manage files, partitions etc......

and if you want drive names like M$oft....why not use symbolic links...
