Solved: I guess I stuffed up....yep...is it repairable????:(
Hello,

I installed Mandrake 9.2 on my Windows PC alongside XP Home.

I could select whether or not I wanted to boot into XP or Linux.

Everything was sweet, I could boot into either OS but when in Mandrake I accidently changed some setting [yep, I was a fiddlin'] so now when I try to boot into Mandrake, I get a black screen with some writing then it says:

Localhost login:

I type my username and password then I'm away....the only prob being that I don't yet know what to type except:

LS, Logout.

I understand that I'm in the bare essentials of Linux, where one must tread warily.....I'm no expert on that.

How do I get the old Mandrake Welcome screen back [lilo?] from the void?????

I guess I stuffed up......is it repairable????

once you login try typing startx.

if it fails gives us what exactly it says. Assuming it starts then we should be able to get you back to just graphical environments with the cli as a optional terminal.

Hi tsunam,

Your advice worked...much appreciated.

Seems so logical, startx.

I may be a newb but I know just enough to work out that startx means launch the GUI (X).

I never would have arrived at that myself though as the only commands know are LS and Logout, and help.

But I was thinking hard about what I could type, but the help command shed no light on the matter.

Can someone pls explain the above quote for me.

Once in my account I went to the control centre and unfiddled the boot option back to what I thought it was prior to my thread here.

many ta's
