UNIX component Monitoring
Hi, I have a problem with one of my components on my UNIX box, it appears to be utilizing and then holding memory until the system runs out of memory and the other components can't run propery - how can I monitor the component to see if this is the case?

Thanks

when I think monitoring, the first thing that comes to mind is ps -auf

What's the component? How much do you know about the problem and how do you know it(by this I mean what commands did you use to find out, how did you isolate the problem, etc)?

The component is part of a software application I'm running on the box - I don't know for sure that this is the one that's causing the problem but I don't believe it's anything else - I'm running a GUI monitoring tool on the system aswell and it's pointing to the application with regards to high memory usage - however it's not at all specific and doesn't break down into the different components or processes of the app. Just from experience using the application I'm guessing it's this particular component I just need to prove it by monitoring it's particular memory usage...

if the monitoring tool shows you that a program is growing in memory and eventually causes a performance problem, then it MUST be that program.

Are you saying the gui tool you're using doesn't show that it's using up the memory? If so, how is it telling you that it's this particular program that is the problem?
