Which linux version?
I am relatively new to the Linux world, and was wondering what version of linux would be best suited for the following requirements and system:

Requirements:
play mp3 files (shuffle mode)
copy files from usb flash drive
able to run open office
be somewhat newbie-friendly
free

System specs (not much to look at - found at the side of the curb
333mhz Celeron
32mb ram
integrated video card
13gb hdd
dvd drive - temporary - for initial loading only

If anyone knows of anything that would work suitably on this system, your knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Most distros offer a 'Live CD' that you can try out to see if it works with your hardware before installing it.
I'd get some of these - I like DamnSmallLinux and PuppyLinux, and because they have a small footprint they should do very well on your computer.

I know you said free, but if yoiu can scrounge some money together, you might want to consider upgrading the RAM, it will do miracles for the system.

just about any distro will work
You should think about getting more RAM because open office and any mutil media will be jerky with that little memory no matter what you do even if you had a faster CPU
