Strange "device" naming problem
Running Mepis 3.3.2 here. On my desktop and in my /mnt folder I've got the following shown:

hda1,2,3,5,6
hdb3,4,5,6
hdc3,4,5,6

Part of the problem is that hdb and hdc are the exact same device. I've got 2 HDD's amd hdb and hdc represent the second HDD. I don't know why they're being presented as they are.

My Mepis install is on hdb/c3.

My main problem is with my DVD drive. When it's not attached both hdb3 and hdc3 are shown as folders/partitions (containing my Mepis install), when my DVD is attached, hdb3 is shown as a CD-ROM. And when I open it, it contains my Mepis install.

So I'm unable to use the DVD drive while in Mepis.

I've tried deleting the hdb entries while logged as root but cannot delete from the desktop.

Any ideas would be appreciated

check the jumper settings on the DVD and hard drive
how have you got these pluged in is the DVD and sconed hard drive pluged into the same cable if so do you have both set as master
what are the makes and modles of the drives in question all of them
so we can look up the jumper settings

hda= primary master
hdb= primary slave
hdc= secondary master
hdd= secondary slave
How does the POST and BIOS report your drive setup?

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that I've got XP, 98se, ME and Mepis all on this machine. All the other OS's were reporting partitions normally.

So the jumpers were correct and BIOS and POST were reporting things correctly. I'm guessing that at some point I had changed the position of the second HDD (where the Mepis is) from primary slave to secondary master and my Mepis had retained something from each position.

I had initially forgotten how fast Mepis installs. so I went ahead and did that. That cleared up the problem and eliminated the hdb entries.
