Default media player
Posted in another thread and it was recommended to start a new one. I have Ubuntu 6.06 installed and have installed VLC player as well as the Mozilla firefox plugin for VLC. Lets say i go to view a video off the internet. Be it yahoo launch or watching some dude pump 3 volts through an Athlon and lifting the heatsink off to see what happens. It seems to want to play the video using Totem when i want it to use VLC instead.

How do i set VLC as the default media player? I have checked preferences and no reference to type of files to associate the program with or anything. I guess i'm still trying to get things working the way i have always been able to do in a windows environment and i'm a bit embarassed to be asking help for something that seems very simple. Thanks. Feel free to just tell me i'm a linux noob and flame me for not getting it myself. I deserve it.

In Firefox I go to Edit> Preferences> Downloads> File Types and change it from there.
I think Totem comes up because of a setting in KDE; Go to Control Center> Components> File Associations and highlight the various file types there. If you select video, a list of formats comes up and you can select the order of preference for the application you want to open that file type with. If VLC is'nt listed, you can add it to the list and move it to the top of the preferences list.

Ended up being a matter of "open with" /usr/bin and selecting 'vlc'. Don't know how i missed it before. Now i'm having issues getting the Nvidia drivers to install. I gotta say. This linux stuff is going to take some getting used to.
