Solved: running a live cd question
I want to know if I want run a knoppix live cd, if it is necessary to have a hard drive installed.

The reason I ask is because I was given a PC which has no hardrive and I have been attempting to get it to run a knoppix and Unbutu live cd without success.

It boots through the splash screens and then just hangs.

The PC is a 4 year old Compaq that originally ran Windows ME before it's hardrive died and it was given to me for parts.

A Live CD is one that can operating without the need of installing into a hard disk.

The system is held in memory and an old PC with limited memory may not be suitable.

go to a junk shop you may be able to find a $20.00 computer
or call around the computer repair shops for a used hard drive you may be suprized at how cheap you can get things from computer repair shops if you sound like you know what you are doing ask for a 5gig drive
once the kernel has loaded it can handle a drive the computer's BIOS can't

besides a computer with out a hard drive is almost useless
