Not too sure myself but if Gentoo boots to a blank screen chances are you will have a filing system installed in the memory.

So press ctrl+alt+backspace will drop you into a terminal mode.

Do a "su" to become the superuser as you need root privileges to edit xorg.conf. Normally a Live CD does not demand a root password for the "su" command but I am not too sure about Gentoo.

Then just type
Code:
vi /ect/X11/xorg.conf
There should be a line
Code:
Driver "nv"
for choosing the nv driver for the video card and
two lines of

horiSync xx-yy
VertRefresh ww-zz

describing the scanning frequencies.

Just make sure the xx-yy and ww-zz match those in your monitor.

Save xorg.conf. When ready type
Code:
startx
to get back the graphic desktop.

That is how I get various distros working whenever I got a blank screen.

every time I press: ctrl + alt + backspace the terminal pops-up then disappears!

after the 10th or somethingth time I've pressed it, a message (nearly like the BlueSOD) comes up saying:

the display server has been cut-off....blah blah....it will come back on in 2mins!

I did the vim command to get to xorg - but there is no reference for "nv", however it does say monitor0 with h/v refresh rates

I decided to check these values in the Ubuntu i got installed; BUT in this xorg, there is "nv" and no "monitor0" and no h/v values

I decided to try some values for my dell E151FP - i got from the net - no luck!

damn - thanks anyways
