Solved: Kubuntu Installation
I have been trying to install Kubuntu Dapper on my server, but when I go through the wizard, it freezes at 36% (I think) every time. What could be causing this? Running the CD live works fine.

Thanks,
J.S.

I think it might be getting hung up identifying hardware. May want to try eather a different distro or maybe removing unnessisary hardware and see what happens.

Now if I remember correctly you are installing Kubuntu becasue of the K Desktop Enverioment, right? If this doesnt install you could try re-installing ubuntu and then simply adding the KDE packages in the repositories once its up and running.

First step for me is downloading a new ISO and burning a new CD, since I tried to copy it and got a read error, although there are no visible scratches. The CD drive in the server's light stays on steady at that point, even when it locks up. I have to turn it off and use a paperclip to get the CD out.

Problem is, the Ubuntu 5.10 CD is a pressed one I ordered. It previously installed fine, but this time, it gives me errors when I get to the first installation step. I will post the exact text when I try the install again, I ordered a bunch of Dapper CDs of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu for several different platforms about a month ago, so they should be coming in soon.

I would need a binary or some other package of the KDE packages since the machine is not connected to the internet. I could bring it to my grandmothers and use her DSL with it, but I really have no way to get it on my dialup.

If I do that, I have to remember to reset the time when I get there. The dim mac has a dead CMOS battery. It won't log in set to 1956. It's not a CR2032 either. Some odd thing that looks like a short AA. Can't find it anywhere.

I finally got Ubuntu back on it, but I have concluded I'm an idiot.

I have no account that I can get into except a very limited one I made during setup that won't even allow sudo, what do I do now?
