new to linux
I am trying to resurrect an older computer. I do not have the original OS that came with the computer. I had Windows 98 and tried to install. It formatted the hard drive and loaded the cdrom support. I tried to restart and load windows 98 but I got a fault error that i did not recognize. So I wanted to try a new thing with linux. I read the linux documentation and downloaded the DVD ISO for suse linux 10.1 on my xp laptop. I burned it to dvd using sonic. The system meets the minimum requirements of 256mb ram (i have 320) and plenty of hard drive space (40gb) and AMD 900 MHz processor. It has a dvd rom drive as well. After changing the boot sequence to cd, the computer does not recognize the dvd install for suse. Does it need a dvd rom driver instead or what? Or do I have to download and burn the 5 or 6 cd version to make this work? Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.

Sounds like the DVD wasn't burned correctly.

No driver should be needed to load any Linux boot CD/DVD.

As a workaround, many Linux CD/DVDs had a floppy image you can right to boot from the floppy and still use the DVD.

thanks for the suggestion...that was it. sonic did not burn the iso image correctly so i downloaded a free program which did the job. unfortunately, i got all the way to the installing packages part and the computer freezes and dvd rom drive keeps shutting down. i guess i'll use the hard drive, ram, and monitor for parts.
