1st time Linux / Chubby Puppy
Hello Everyone.....

I am trying to use Linux for the 1st time......Namely Chubby Puppy running from CD.

OK...I burned to CD ok and got it to start loading and it came to a stop saying that I needed a partition for file "PUP001"???? It also said that if I didn't have a separate partition for this file that Puppy could utilize a folder in the NTFS / XP partition called c:\PUP001....

It said something about using the read / write to NTFS file systems could be dangerous?????

1st question ..... Does this mean that I can just go to C: (My only HDD where XP is installed) and create a Folder named PUP001????? And is it dangerous to my XP installation to do this?

EDIT: OK I answered my own question here, there is a dnload for PUP001 and that needs to be unzipped to C:\pup001. anyway, what is dangerous about doing it this way instead of having a 2nd partition just for linux?

After saying that I should either create a partition or file for PUP001 it said that I could continue to load Puppy by pressing enter...I did, and got to another stop where it wanted somewhere to save user files and that a USB drive could be used by plugging in a USB drive and typing (I think it was SPR1...).....so I plugged in my IPOD Shuffle (it is set to data mode) and puppy recognized it and asked me to type the SPR1 if I wanted to use the USB drive as storage and I did so ...... a couple more things loaded and then the PC stopped responding.....I left it sit for 10-15 minutes just to be sure I was not being impatient and then did a hard shutdown.

2nd question....Can a USB key be used to store files like that or is it asking for a USB enabled HDD???

EDIT: I figured out why my USB drive didn't work......None of the modules that Puppy tried to load worked for my USB drivers, in fact, the only Driver module that Puppy loaded that worked for my hardware was the driver for my Gigabit Lan card (Marvell Yukon).
I got Puppy to load by not using my USB drive and found out that none of the modules Puppy tried to load worked for my hardware.

My new question....what is the easiest way to find the modules I need to get so I can get my PC hardware working with Puppy.

Also, even though Puppy loaded a driver for and recognized my LAN card, It said that there was no network (even though there was) does this mean that the module puppy loaded for my LAN card was not the right module or is it something else???

I have read so many threads in the other forums about how useful Linux is and I especially liked the idea that I would not have to reformat and partition my current HDD or buy a 2nd drive to use Puppy Linux so I wanted to try it, now I just need to get it working with my very, very, limited knowledge of Linux

Thanks in advance for any help

I'm not familiar with Puppy Linux, but you shouldn't have to install any files in your C:\ partition to run Linux.

I would suggest using a more mainstream Linux distro as your first try at Linux. (It will be easier to get answer and probably be more up to date.)

Don't use the ntfs driver in the kernel if you decide to try writing to your NTFS window partition from Linux.
Check out the new ntfs-3g driver which works much better and safer.
(Just search on ntfs-3g)

It's not that I have to install anything to my C drive. It will and does run without those files. Puppy runs entirely from RAM. It loads into RAM from the CD and then lets you take the CD out and use the burner to copy and save files. From what I have been reading, Puppy can actually be loaded right from a USB key or Flash card so that the CD drive is completely free for file writing and Puppy becomes even more portable.

The C drive file is for saving user settings on the PC. My understanding is that once I have all the modules I need to run all of the hardware in my PC I can put them right on the CD and then every time I load Puppy it will load my drivers and personal settings right from the CD instead of needing the C: drive file???????

Also, once I get my USB ports working, I believe Puppy will allow me to use my USB drive to save the settings files.

I am just having some problems getting everything running smooth and also having problems figuring out what modules I need to run the specific hardware in my PC, Graphics, Audio, USB ports, LAN card.

I was playing with one of the utilities that tells me what modules loaded and what ones didn't and the only one that did load and said "Running" instead of "NULL" was for my LAN card but even though it said my LAN card was running it wouldn't let me create a connection to the internet. It tells me that there is no network present even though there is??????

So, does this mean that the module puppy loaded for my LAN card is the wrong one as well??

Here is a report from Everest on my system summary, in case anyone has questions on what hardware I am trying to get Puppy to run.

The biggest thing to get running first are the Lan card and the USB ports......... I have been reading on the Linux and Puppy websites but I am either not looking in the right places or I just don't know what I am looking for
