ubuntu linux for humman beings
I just recieved the Ubuntu CD. After putting it in , it went to do it's thing, I kept getting this message: uncompressing Linux... OK,Booting the Kernel. With a flashing line under it, like I was supposed to type a command.

Can someone help me please?!?!?!

Hi Jarhead82,

Let it finish booting into the selection menu for gui or command line prompt. The flashing line under it will be followed by a blank screen before the gui startup.

Just make sure you have the CD device properly specified in your BIOS boot order (sounds like you do), and if you have more than one CD device in your system (like I do), make sure you use the one specified in the BIOS.

lotuselat79, about how long should the process take between the flashing line and the actual start up of the GUI? And is the hard drive susposed to be formatted by the CD or does it need special attention before trying to install Ubunto? I've been on the phone with the jarhead and we really don't know what we're doing here. Just for fun, he took the hard drive out, after nothing would work at all, and put it in another old PC and darned if Win2000Pro didn't come up and actually loaded. We thought that hard drive had 98 on it before trying the Ubunto. So, this is becoming a real adventure. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi junker,

If the Live CD with Ubuntu is booting, then my experience has been within a couple of minutes - I'll check to make sure on my next reboot and post here.

The hard drive has nothing to do with it as Ubuntu is being booted up in RAM, so the requirement is for at least 256MB and Pentium 1-4. Ubuntu lists a requirement of 3GB of hard disk for installation on a desktop, otherwise, depends on the size reqmts of apps you install.

My post is relative to a bootable Live CD of Ubuntu, NOT an installation CD of Ubuntu onto hard disk.

OK, thanks. I'm fairly certain he doesn't have enough computer to run it. I know there's not enough RAM in it. He's sending me a Ubuntu CD and I'll give it a try in a little newer PC with at least minimum specs. Thanks for the help.

jarhead, you savy? I'm still looking for your motherboard stuff.
