Need Help w/ Terminal Commands in FreeBSD
So far at work I have been busy just fixing the mess the last guy left me. Half finished websites, corrupt and not working programs, and alot of projects. In that time, I just moved files to and from the server, simple file maintenance via PuTTY and FTP connection. No biggie.

Well, now I got everything running tip top shape on our websites and all the upcomming projects are in a nice neat stack in my "ToDo" Box. It's time to get my hands dirty on the server.

The only way, that I know right now at lest, to work with the server is though PuTTY. PuTTY if you don't know is a program that alows you to log in to the server and use terminal commands. All today I have been looking around, getting a feel for the system.

Now this is where I am starting to get confused. Some commands just don't work. hdparm, usermod & userdel are not recognized commands. Neather is arch, free and pstree. luckily uname worked and I figured out what the OS was. (mind you all commands listed here were typed in as root)

I have never worked with FreeBSD before. Does it have a different set of console commands? Or am I just missing something?

Some commands may not be the same as Linux, but it could also depend on what they have installed. I occassionaly forget to install something when I have done a fresh install of a Linux box. Mind you I don't do default installs. I go thru and select the packages that I only want.

This website might help you.

Looks like FreeBSD does not have usermod.

hmmmm. Looks like a lot of commands are different or don't even exist at all. That would explain the problems I have been having. Thanx for the link and the info Squashman, this page clears up a lot.

Guess this means I am going to have to drop by the library and grab a few books on FreeBSD for some after hours reading.

I can't remember if I have ever linked you to one of the other forums I visit called LittleBlackDog. We have a couple of FreeBSD people over there. One guy has a FreeBSD website but I can't remember the name of it. I will go look for it and report back.
