Angry Why I am not able to connect to wireless network?
Hi Everyone
I recently installed Fedora core 5 (kernel version 2.6.15-2054). Everything is fine with my system. Except I am really frustrated with my internet connection. I have intel pro/wireless 2915abg card. I have copied files of ipw2200-fw-2.4 in /lib/firmware. I have started the network manager in gnome and in knetwork manager. They show network available. But I am not able to connect to any network, neither open nor my own network which is wep enabled. would anyone give me step by step way of rectify the problem. When I try to connect to my network which is wep protected, i get prompt for weppassphrase. But even when i enter the wep password i again get the prompt after sometime. Please help me out. Thanks in advance.

Are there any error/warning or other relevant messages in /var/log/message?

I'll respond to your question in the other thread here, because it's more appropriate.
The reason you see more than one item in your Grub is because you have two different kernels installed. It's no big deal, but sometimes a kernel update can cause some hardware to stop working, so first thing I'd try is booting with your older kernel.

As far as getting your wireless working, that's kind of a tricky issue that after years of using Linux, I'm still learning myself!
The first thing that I would do is check out http://linux-wless.passys.nl/ and see what level of compatibility your wireless adapter has and if there is a page for the driver. It usually includes a link to the homepage for each adapter's driver, so you may find some detailed info there on how to set up your particular card.

I've never had the easiest time with Intel wireless chipsets, but I have gotten a couple of them running with minimal tweaking, so try finding some info on your specific card, and go from there. Google is a great place to start if you haven't tried that already. Chances are, if you have a problem, someone else already has too.

Alternatively, you can see if ndiswrapper can utilize a Windows driver for your system, though that is the less-preferred option.

Thanks Fenderfreek and Linuxphile
I tried ipw2200 driver for the card. My card was detecting wireless networks. Sometimes it was able to connect to unsecured networks too. But I was not able to connect to my wep protected network. When I click on my network, I get a dialog box. I put in my passphrase. Same passphrase I put in my router. But i noticed that knetwork manager which i am using for kde, does something, it stops at aroung 57% where it does some kind of ip configuration. And dreaded dialog box comes back. so I thought of using ndiswrapper. I downloaded the latest ndiswrapper. I found that my kernel is not having a stack size of 16k so I downloaded fedora core 5's kernel 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5.stk16 and installed it. Even after installation, there was no folder in /usr/src/kernels for 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5.stk16 which ndiswrapper looks for during installation. Only the kernel folder that is present is 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5. So I am not even able to install ndiswrapper. Why linux makes wireless card configuration so tough i dont understand. This thing is killing me. I want to use my fedora 5 for all the things but unfortunately there is a long way to go....dont you think so. Should I completely uninstall and install some other distro in which wireless card configuration is not such a pain?? Any suggestion. Waiting for your replies........................................

Well, sadly, I have no other suggestions to remedy the current situation. Yours is particularly troublesome though, as I've never had that much trouble getting a wireless adapter to work.
If you're not opposed to the idea of wiping clean and trying a new distro, I use Ubuntu on my laptop and it worked with my wireless card with no configuration, where FC5 fell flat on it's face most every time and I never could get it to work right.

Hey Fenderfreek
Finally I solved the problem. Actually for my card ipw2200 drivers of intel works. So i just put the drivers in /lib/firmware and restarted the laptop. Then I configured the router which was accepting 40/10 hex bits password to 128/26 hex bits and bingo, wireless is on. I am having a rocking time with my system now.
Thanks for your help.
