Question What Desktop Enviroment do you Use?
Just a simple question, What Graphical Desktop do you use/like to use on your distro of choice? Do you just use the default that comes installed on your distro or do you have a favorite that you install?

I am just curious as I only have worked with two (KDE and Gnome) yet know there is more out there. It would be interesting to find out about some of them while learning what the more popular ones are here.

I use Gnome on my laptop and KDE on my desktop, though I personally prefer Gnome. It's cleaner looking and imho, much easier to configure and do real work with. KDE has lots of fun stuff, but Gnome simplifies mounting remote volumes and shares, which I use a lot with my laptop. XFCE is a little too light for me, though it'd do in a pinch.

Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.

I've been dinking with Xfce (in Xubuntu 6.10) for a few days. Some things that I take for granted, like the ability to drag icons right to the desktop, aren't there. But my test PC (P3 450 MHz, 650 RAM) runs much better than it did under GNOME or KDE. CPU useage was around 7 - 10% when idling in GNOME, but only 1% with Xfce. Apps like GIMP and OpenOffice seem to come up about 40 to 60% faster.
I'm figuring out how to get a few important icons to the desktop, and contemplating whether having more is really that important. The desktop is pleasant to look at and seems to work well for a slower PC without being so geeky that I can't use it.

I turned my "I-hate-computers" brother on to a copy of Freespire and he's been thanking me ever since....

Seems pretty darn stable to me.

Installed as his only OS and did not have a problem from day one and has yet to have one...
