disk full
I guess I am what my sister refers to as a problem child(she's a school teacher). Anyway, I been burning CDs over the last few days and afterwards I move the files to the trash. I thought the trash emptied on boot up or something. Or perhaps it is something else. I booted up today and got some balloon on the desktop saying my disk was 98% full. I burned a CD and that's when apps stopped launching and began freezing up. Linux isn't supposed to do this I thought but I'll reboot anyway. So I rebooted and now I can't even get to the desktop. I get a dialog box informing me that it was unable to write to some authorization file or something. Any suggestions? Just sign me Problem Child

Yeah, you have to empty the trash yourself. First, give us the exact output, or as close as you can get, of the error message.
If you want to go ahead and tackle it yourself, boot with the live cd, and delete some files from the HDD from there, then try a reboot.

Actually, I thought I should be emptying the trash just like you do with Macs but didn't know how to do it as I didn't have the trash icon on the desktop so I could right click it or something. Is that how it would work? When I think about it, I've probably burned at least 5 gigs of CDs over the last few days (video & audio disks).

You can add a trashcan applet to your menubar, and when you right click it, it gives you the option to empty the trash. Alternatively, you can set your desktop preferences not to hide icons and you'll have an icon on the desktop for it, though I don't like clutter, so I opt for the first option.

stuck on stupid
I tried booting from the CD but I keep getting to a certain point where it says that some installation components failed to load from the CD. That happened the first time I tried the Live CD when I was still running windows on this box. Anyway, here is the exact message I get when I try to boot the system:

GDM could not write to your authorization file. This could mean that you are out of disk space or that your home directory could not be opened for writing. In any case, it is not possible to log in. Please contact your system administrator.

So it's stuck on stupid for the moment. What should I try next?
