 | Senior Member with 170 posts. | | | | Truly frustrated now Okay guys, this is getting to be a real pain. I decided to start over and did a clean install. I updated to 6.0.6 and rebooted as prompted. Only now it only starts up in the command line mode and tells me X-server (the GUI) is missing. It wants me to check the configuration. I have no idea what I'm looking at nor what to do. This is really getting problematic. Do all newbies have these types of problems? Okay I'm being saracastic, but justifiably so. I performed an apt-get update and now it's hanging at 99%, trying to access some repository. So how do I get the graphical interface back? It was there before I rebooted after updating to 6.0.6. I'd really like to really try out Linux but if it's going to continually be this hard and this problematic, frakk it.

Are you using the repository list I gave you? | | Senior Member with 288 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: California Experience: Advanced | | If I am not mistaken, it sounds like you are using Ubuntu 6.06. I had seen problems at first with upgrading to 6.06 dealing with the xserver. What I had to do was enter: Code: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This uses the Debian Package Manager (dpkg) and reconfigures your xserver (GUI). You will have to use the keyboard solely to navigate the utility which is related to this command. When I went through this, I left all values default as it tries to detect video hardware and such automatically. This fixed the problem that I had...hopefully it will do the same for you.
Take care.

After running this, run Code: sudo aptitude update
This should update system settings and such.
Then just reboot your computer by entering sudo reboot in the command-line terminal. | | Senior Member with 170 posts. | | | | End result It's hanging on cipherfunk.org repository. It eventually says it is unable to connect to the server. Anyway, I tried the dpkg refigure command and rebooted. It rediscovered the GUI but the command sudo apt=get update still hangs on cipherfunk.org repository, whatever that is. Yes, Prunejuice I'm using the sources.list you gave me and I haven't tried to edit it or anything like I did before. Thanks, guys.

I'm no Linux guru, that's for sure, but have looked at several Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu repo lists and never seen that one...
Also, I don't understand how you got to where you are. You say you did a clean install, but you also say you "updated" to 6.06. So did you clean install from a Breezy CD, then update to Dapper, or did you install from a Dapper CD, or what?

As for "Cipherfunk", it appears on the sources list that I got from Prunejuice back when I had that sources.list screwup. He seems to be a member of the forum with good-standing so I trust that the list is okay. Anyway, it doesn't ever seem to be accessible (cipherfunk).
