Xandros:How do you install a program after downloading it?
I'm running Xandros release 2.6.11-x1. When i download any program i can't figure out how to install it. i just downloaded Opera web browser to see how it works in Xandros, but this happens after i download any program:
The dialog box that appears looks like this:

Opening Opera_9.02-20060919.5-shared_qt_en_i386.deb

You have chosen to open:

opera _9.02-20060919.5-shared_qt_en_i386i.deb

which is a debian GNU/Linux Package
from:httppera.digital.nu

what should Firefox do with this file?

Open With /usr/lib/mime/debian-view (default)

Save to Disk

Do this automatically for files like this

Cancel

I chose "Open With" and when I click on the "download this file" it does that but HOW DO YOU INSTALL AND USE THE PROGRAM?

I opened Xandros File Manager and followed the path shown above. I opened the "All File Systems" program then the (root) / folder, then I went down to the "usr" folder then the"lib" folder then the "mime" folder and inside of it is a folder called "packages". When I opened it many files appeared. I didn't see any that showed Opera, but just to try opening one of them, I clicked on it and a large text file appeared. I closed it and tried opening more of the programs and the same thing happens when I click any of the files. ( only a text description of the file)
I'M LOST! HOW DO YOU INSTALL AND USE A PROGRAM AFTER IT'S BEEN DOWNLOADED?
Thanks,Jim

Hi Jim,

I don't use Opera, but I would first look on the Opera website for a forum or docs related to using Opera on Linux/Unix. Since Firefox uses a .mozilla directory underneath the home directory of a user to save bookmarks, extensions, etc. then I would look for a similar .opera directory underneath the home directory of the user. If it isn't there then the Opera docs should indicate how and where to locate your operational files for it.

Did the package manager actually install it, or just save it somewhere? I'd save it to the local drive, then make sure you're using the proper program to install the deb. Once it's run, you should be able to type "opera" in a command line, or make a launcher for it. Correct me if I'm mistaken in my assumption of what you're trying to do here.
