/dev/dsp:
Upon boot Linux has no audio output. I have an onboard sound card. Message says
- sound server failed. No driver. /dev/dsp : no such device .Will use null output.
Windows on partition in same machine has no problem with audio output.
--- what must be the problem?

No drivers for your soundcard.

check dmesg, see what it says during the boot process. It may complain about not being able to identify PCI adapter.
