Client-to-server software incl X, on a Win platform
Not quite sure where to put this as it's sort of cross the line... but what I want to do is log on to my workstation at university (currently rather distant), which is a MacOS/Darwin platform, and perform work on it using X windows applications. And... I'd like to do this from a Windows computer.

I've tried XWin, it worked fine for a couple of Solaris machines but I couldn't get it to connect properly to the Darwin one which is most important. I can log on to the Darwin machine simply using putty/ssh to access the filesystem and simpler applications, but there's no X support there. I had a quick look at cygwin but it seems to me there's no X there either.

What I'm left with if I can't find anything to work, is to install Debian on this Win machine as well and set up a dual boot. Should be easy enough to just ssh in from such a system. As I'm only visiting here for a week though, I'd rather not go through that if I don't need to so I thought I'd ask.

Open source software is preferred, but I have some access to temporary loans of most things. Any ideas, or pointers, or things I've missed already perhaps? I'm not terribly experienced in *nix systems, even though I'm getting there... one step at a time!

Thanks in advance.

So you want Remote Access into OS X. Why not just install a VNC server. Most any vnc client and connect to any VNC server.

It is built into Tiger.

And you can tunnel it over SSH.

SOLVED: Client-to-server software incl X, on a Win platform
Thanks, I'd do that but it was mainly a matter of these next few days during which I can't directly access the workstation, plus I'm not sure the system administrator would be too keen.

I did however just this afternoon manage to solve the issue myself, having spent some more time on it the last couple of days. I'd only explored cygwin earlier, but now realized there's a whole additional part to it called cygwin/X. Using that, with an extra switch when ssh:ing into the university workstation, went fine. It was terribly slow however, so it is probably just not usable but good to have made it sorta work anyhow and if anyone else has the same problem... well enjoy.
