Installing Linux on a Aptiva 2162
I'm trying to put DSL(Damn small linux(pardon my french)) on my Aptiva 2162 that is REALLLLY old. It was collecting dust for the longest time till I decided to put Linux on it. For some reason, it will not boot off the CD and asks for a floppy via a picture. I then found, after the longest time searching, a floppy image (Smart Boot Manager) that will allow me to boot off of the CD... but the computer won't even boot off of that! It just freezes.
I have already wiped off the Hard drive, so I cannot access Windows 95 for any reason. I can, however, use another computer to download or burn anything onto a floppy or CD. I have already tried to modify my BIOS to load the CD first(Doesn't work).

Specifics:
  • 32 MB memory
2 MB ATI Rage II (Sad, isn't it?)
    4 GB two HD
Floppy and CD Drive separate from the tower
    233Mhz Intel MMX
    IBM Aptiva 2162

sd33med,

Do you -

1) Put your Linux CD in the drive
2) Shutdown & reboot your computer

What happens when it starts up ????

Actually, I got it to run. I just had to use another boot floppy specifically for DSL. It now is working.

But now, I have two questions:

1) Does Linux support External Ethernet from USB 1.1? (Or 2.0... I don't know which it has)
2) Is there any other Linux distros that run on my ancient, awful IBM Aptiva that you would recommend. If I got the best one, well that's dandy.
