Widescreen Monitor Problem
Just installed Kbuntu. My HP 24" widescreen monitor is not right. They didn't have my specific monitor under the HP selections so I chose a generic 24" widescreen at 1920x1200 and 16:9 aspect ratio but it's still whack.

I read the following at Linux.org:

Open terminal and execute this:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

this command will ask a lot of questions. accept default option. enter correct HorizSync, VertiRefresh rates when prompted. it will show a list of available Resolutions too. select supported resolutions.

In the HP manual I see the Vertical Refresh (48-85) however the other reads "Horizontal Frequency" (30-94) not "Horizontal Sync". Is that the same thing?

Does this suggestion seem like a good way to go about it?

Thanks,
Harold

You may not need to. xorg will get the modelines. Here is mine for a 19" widescreen.
Code:
Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen0"
	Device "Card0"
	Monitor "Monitor0"
	DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
		Modes "1440x900"
	EndSubSection
Save your current xorg.conf
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.working
then you can play around with it.
What is your graphics card?
You can look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what is going on
Here is part of mine;
Code:
II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1440x900"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1440 x 900
(--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (89, 87); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config
(--) NVIDIA(0): option
(--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp
