Ok, first of all, I couldn't install Kubuntu because in the "select a disk" section of the installer, the program would display the "wait" cursor and never do anything beyond that.

Secondly, I tried to use the alternate install disk, and that brought about a whole new problem... It won't even boot up at all, and now I can't get back into Vista. It'll start up the Kubuntu startup splash thing, but then it goes black until I hit the power button. The only reason I'm able to get here is using the LiveCD. Is there any way to fix this?

Download the Debian KDE cd and see if that will work instead of KUbuntu. I had lockup problems as well with kubuntu, just not in the same place.

I forgot to mention that the second problem is fixed because I ended up reformatting my HD and reinstalling Vista fresh. I was able to save my data, as well as dig into the back of my brain to dust off what I could vaguely remember from MS-DOS in order to do so (including guessing at commands that I never knew).

Ok, brie, concerning your questions in the other topic--

With the LiveCD I was using Dapper, but when I tried the alternate install (which prompted the hd reformat) I tried Feisty Fawn.

I've got a gig of ram and have an AMD Turion64x2 processor.

Thanks to both of you for your help! I'm very impressed at how hard people try to help each other on this board I'm trying out the debian right now (still downloading), but I think I'd be happy just trying out Linux in any form.

Well, I installed Debian, and that won't boot either. During the installation, I kept getting error messages about the GRUB boot loader, and it eventually gave me a message that said "No boot loader has been installed, either because you chose not to or because your specific architecture doesn't support a boot loader yet. You will need to boot manually with the/vmlinuz kernel on partitian /dev/sda2 and root=/dev/sda2 passed as a kernel argument." Now when I start up my computer, unless I go into the boot menu it will say "Missing Operating System," and it won't go into either debian or Vista.

Edit: I've gotten Debian working, but now I can't figure out how to get it to dual-boot so I can switch from Debian to Vista. How do I do that?

The fact that you were getting errors about the boot loader is probably your problem. The boot loader is a very small portion of the install and would display a list of all Debian Linux and then Windows in the list.

I'd try installing again.

Are you sure you downloaded the correct file? Is your system 64 or 32 bit? Which file did you download?

Well, I installed the one that had AMD in the title because I've got a dual-core AMD CPU. I think my system is 32-bit, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

So, now I've figured out how to edit menu.lst (to alter the file, I have to open filemanager--superuser and then restart while that's still open, otherwise the file won't open) so that I can boot another OS, but NOW my problem is that when I put in the information to boot Vista, which is, according to a tutorial I went to,

root (sd0,0)
chainloader +1

Instead of bringing me to Vista, it brings me to a Windows-esque thing that is actually a diagnostics test. It shows a window that says "choose an option" and has three buttons, two for system tests and one to restart the computer.

You shouldn't have to do any of that jazz. It should install automatically.

The AMD version is only for 64 bit computers. The 32 bit (i386) OS will work on a 64 bit computer. Try that one.

Great choice by the way going with AMD instead of Intel.
