I forgot to mention that the second problem is fixed because I ended up reformatting my HD and reinstalling Vista fresh. I was able to save my data, as well as dig into the back of my brain to dust off what I could vaguely remember from MS-DOS in order to do so (including guessing at commands that I never knew).
Ok, brie, concerning your questions in the other topic--
With the LiveCD I was using Dapper, but when I tried the alternate install (which prompted the hd reformat) I tried Feisty Fawn.
I've got a gig of ram and have an AMD Turion64x2 processor.

I'm trying out the debian right now (still downloading), but I think I'd be happy just trying out Linux in any form.
