Solved: Can't install Ubuntu 7.05
Hi there,

I'm installing Ubuntu 7.04, 64bit. But it's stuck at the very beginning. I'm seeing the sceen:

* Setting preliminary keymap... [OK]
* Preparing restricted drivers... [OK]
* Starting basic networking..... [OK]
* Starting kernel event manager...[OK]
* Loading hardware drivers... _

It's stopped here for a long time. Could you guys tell me how to do now, please?

Thanks so much!

It sounds like you're just booting it. Do you have a 64 bit processor?

Try booting with the following option: acpi=noapic

@briealeida: Yes, here is my configuration:
- AMD 64 AthlonX2
- NVIDIA

Someone said that it's AMD Athlon 64 Dual core that causes the problem...

@linuxphile: Just a silly question, how to boot with the option you said? I didn't see any command line screen to pass this option.

Thanks you all and waiting for your reply...

Oh yeah. I'm downloading the text based CD installer. Let's try if I can pass parameters...

I installed it successfully. But it can't load at the first time. The screen of "ubuntu" loading is stopped at about 50%. Don't know how to do now. I left the defaults last installation.

Not all Linux distributions are the same. In fact, each distribution system has its own personality and presents its own set of challenges.In most cases the ubuntu partitioner is unable to shrink windows drive to make room for linux portion.So try wubi. Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu Linux as any other application.

Thanks, I've heard about it this morning. I'll give it a try now.

Good day.

Now I installed well, but couldn't log into graphics user interface (X windows?) I had to boot in recovery mode, login in command line. Don't know how to continue here. xrandr doesn't work: "Can't open display".

Could you tell me how to turn the graphic mode on? Thanks so much!

OK, I figured out. Just add these options when you install and boot, it'll be OK:

noapic irqpoll noirqdebug

- When you install, at the setup menu (wait 30s), press F6 and add above option. Install normally.

- When you boot (first time), press ESC to get boot menu. Select [Ubuntu, kernel xxxxx-generic]. Edit by pressing 'e'. Select [kernel /boot/....], add above option. Press 'b' to boot. OR
Quote:
open a terminal type:-

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

then go to the bottom of the document and look for the grub boot options and look for something like this:

"title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-16-generic
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic root=UUID=16badbe3-91d7-4ba1-9446-e874976aea45 ro splash noapic
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-16-generic
quiet
savedefault"

then add the string "irqpoll noirqdebug" into the kernel option so you end up with the new line that looks like:-

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic root=UUID=16badbe3-91d7-4ba1-9446-e874976aea45 ro splash noapic irqpoll noirqdebug

then look or search for a line that is something like:-

# defoptions=quiet splash noapic

and add the new flags to it so it looks like:-

# defoptions=quiet splash noapic irqpoll noirqdebug

so the flags get carried through each time the kernel is upgraded.
