I know all about this in KDE and in Windows. It's GNOME that has me stumped.

When I click on the minimize button, the window seems to go into a Black Hole.

When I minimize a window, where does it go?
How do I restore a minimized window?
How do I see all of the active - but minimized - windows?

Minimized windows are located on the status bar at the bottom of your computer.
Click on the status bar location for a window and it will either maximize or minimize depending on what state the window is in currently.

Some status bars (I think KDE does this) have an arrow-left or an arrow-right at the bottom of the computer screen (status bar) and which actively either hide or display all of the windows currently in use for the session or workspace in use. Look to see if you have either of these (there may be only one configured to be on just one side or the other) and click on it to see what happens.

Hold the Alt key and press the Tab key. Alt-Tab will allow you to cycle through minimized windows. This works in Windows as well as Linux.

Neither left-clicking on the status bar nor right-clicking on either the upper status bar or lower status bar reveals any clues to where my windows went.

The attached screen shot shows what I see.

Violà ! That works.

It's true that the procedure works in Windows.. I never use it because the Windows status bar displays all my active windows. Likewise KDE.

With Windows and KDE I can see what I need to know without having to take the extra step of tabbing through. That's a good feature. I'd call this a feature in need of implementation in GNOME.

i'm glad that works in the meantime, but it also sounds like the Window Selector got removed from your taskbar. Right click on your taskbar and select "Add To Panel" and then choose the "Window Selector". Now you should have a graphical window selector in your taskbar.
