Your Ubuntu certainly will play DVD's with what it has but it's 'illegal' for various reasons. You need to DL and install a couple of small files to get the players to work. I suggest going to an Ununtu specific forum and asking them. Remember, Google is your best friend.

Hi RuB3N,

Look here at the Unofficial Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) Starter Guide and
use your Find in This Page browser search for: dvd.

It should have the information you are seeking.

Totem comes with Ubuntu and tries to play commercial DVDs but I've had problems with it. After going through the steps documented in the Ubuntu docs for enabling commercial DVD playback support in Ubuntu, I've been using VLC for DVD playback and it works without issues on 98% of the DVDs I've played using it.

Peace...

By first using the System->Administration->Update Manager Check Function button only - i.e. DO NOT use the Install Update Function button; then using the Synaptic Package Manager I show VLC and related packages available for download and installation. Use the Synaptic Package Manager for this and you should be all set.

VLC works great as a DVD player app but it does have some issues with some DVDs. Some cause it to crash when loading DVD menus but when I don't try to access the DVD menus, VLC is fine and so on. Generally speaking, VLC works fine and you can use it to take screenshots of paused scenes, etc.

Glad you got it working.

Peace...
