When you install a Linux you have to provide a root password. Very few distro avoid using the root account and Ubuntu is one of them but I don't think Freespire is one.

In any case if you type at the terminal
Code:
sudo su
Freespire would give you temporary the root privilege in terminal.

You post #28 shows that you have only one hard disk hooked up as hdc and there is only one partition in Linux inside.

Since this is only one partition and you can get a Grub prompt then hdc1 can be booted by the following command in Grub prompt
Code:
configfile (hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lst

I was hoping that you haven't supply the full list of "fdisk -l".

If you have installed Freespire over the Win2k then you have destroyed the data because

(1) All previous partitions have been removed.
(2) Freespire foot print overwritten on your Win2k.

The information does suggest that you have given 10.2Gb or the full disk of 1317 cylinders all to hdc1. Normally this would be hard to do because you have to confirm to Linux that" please use all my hard disk for installation" and then re-confirm with a "yes" when queried again.

As any operating system needs a partition for residence you should have some empty hard disk space ready before the installation.

Yeah the output I gave for fdisk -l was it, nothing else. So it looks like there's no other partition with win2k. When I first installed I almost did not do it as a partion but then I went back, maybe I messed up, but I don't remember it asking me to confirm. Oh well live and learn!!! Now can you tell me how to install an external modem, it comes with software. I need to know how to install the software. Thanks!

This site is using aa backup copy and your last post disappears.

You select the first choice to install or run Ubuntu as Live CD. It boots you up to a full blow operating system. To install it you have to click the "install hard disk" icon at the desktop. If you don't you can use it just like any Live CD. That is the way most Live CDs work nowaday.

You can also use Freespire 2.0 as a Live CD but it would be the 2nd choice in the menu.

I have just installed Freespire myself and it does has the option of "Take over the entire disk". I went for the second option and installed it in my sda14 partition. I am using Freespire to do this reply.
