Hi bolong69,

Welcome to TSG!

What you intend has been implemented via deployment of the Squid proxy server on Linux.

Read this article here.

First, however, you will need to select a Linux version. Ubuntu would be an easy choice, but almost any Linux version would do. However, you will need to understand security in order to keep your server and system safe.

Read 10 things you should do to a new Linux PC before exposing it to the Internet.

Here is an Ubuntu Security Guide. Here is the Ubuntu Starter Guide for Fiesty Fawn release.

You can start your project by downloading or obtaining a Live CD ISO image of the Linux version you select and burning it as an image to a bootable CD. Check out Live CD Linux ISO images here.

Squid can be added to Ubuntu by using the Synaptic Package Manager after using the Update Manager Check Function button only - i.e. DO NOT click on the Install Update button of the Update Manger.

Hi bolong69,

I repaired the first link which you have not seen yet, so read that article for the author's experience.

Good luck!

Best of luck to you!

I've deployed several squid servers on linux and have had great experiences with them. The most recent one was put into production this past weekend and I haven't heard a peep.

Hi bolong69,

Please refer back to post #2 in this thread. The last paragraph of post#2 tells you how to add Squid to your installation.

Please refer to this web page for configuring Squid, and note the links at the bottom of the web page for explanation.

You should have another drive for backup purposes equal to or greater than in size to your server installation hard drive. Norton Ghost will work - yes, or Acronis True Image.

If you download the Live CD ISO file, and boot up from that after burning it as an image, there is an installation icon on the Desktop and you should be able to install from that.

My advice for you if you are trying to do a dual-boot install is to look at the signature links for member Saikee in this forum - i.e. find a post of his in any thread to which he has replied or search for his posts in this forum. One of his signature links is about dual-booting and should be very helpful.
