Connecting Fedora Core 6 to my wireless network
Hi all.

I'm pretty much a newbie to Linux, so bear with me...

I downloaded a copy of Fedora Core 6 a while back. Now, while I don't have it installed in a separate partition, I do have it installed in VMware (saved my pennies to get a licence).

Now, what I want to do is get Fedora to recognise and install my wireless card. It's a built-in Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG card. I have already downloaded the drivers from Intel (saved to my USB drive, then copied to the desktop), but I need help in the installation process.

Thank you in advanced.

Hi techkid,

Read the manpage for iwconfig to configure a wireless network interface.

Other commands related to wireless in Fedora are: iwlist, iwpriv, and iwspy.

I hope this helps.

The problem is not in connecting to my network, it is that the wireless card is not even detected.

I have had a look at the readme and installation files, but in all honesty, they go right through my head without registering any understanding.

I've gotten so used to Windows Plug & Pray system (heck, even a 10-year-old can handle Windows), that Fedora is like learning Japanese by simply having a page of kanji put in front me.

I still have a lot to learn...

Hi techkid,

Sorry, I misunderstood. Go back to Intel where you got the drivers and look for any documentation like a user guide or installation notes wrt your wireless card.

Or, you can try the following commands (as root) assuming that the file ipw2200-firmware is part of what you downloaded from Intel - do it from the desktop where you have the downloaded driver:
yum install ipw2200-firmware
modprobe ipw2200

Ref: I cannot confiure wireless networking card Intel PRO/2200BG.

Or, try to follow similar more detailed Linux installation guidelines here.

I'll give them a go, and let you know whether I break it or not...

EDIT: Just for your reference, this is where I got the drivers from: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...9&submit=Go%21

I got the latest release for it (as you would).

No luck...

I've been trying all night (and slept for part of the day at work... good thing weekends are quiet), but no luck. I've followed the steps through, but to no avail.

I'm going to put this pursuit on hold until Monday. I hope to make some sort of breakthrough by then.

Quick question. I had a look at the Fedora home page, and saw the release of Fedora Core 7. I saw that it has some level of wireless support built in to it, so I would like to know if this is what I should turn to (considering that I'm experiencing nothing but disaster with Fedora 6). I'd also like to know if it is a stable release, if anyone has any experience with it, or if it is something like Vista (in that it's stable enough to be released, but not enough to give people much faith in actually running it).

Yes, I can see the disbelieving look on people's faces, with me using "Vista" and "stable" in the same sentence.

Did you get the driver documentation from the Intel website as I suggested in my previous post? At the very least it should contain installation instructions.

Also, have you checked the documentation at the Fedora website here.

There is also a book on Fedora Core 6. You can visit this website to see an TOC of the book: Red Hat Fedora Core 6 Unleashed

They sell the book for 45% off of list price - a very good deal.

Have you consulted the Fedora FAQ here?
