I haven't got a clue how to install these video drivers
I'm trying to install the drivers for my ATI card and the instructions talk about things that I do not understand whatsoever.

The powernow-k8.c and powernow-k8.h files should be
placed in the arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq directory.
The kernel will then need to be rebuilt and the system
rebooted. Builds of the 64-bit arch/x86_64 kernel use
the same source files.

I have no idea what it means to rebuild the kernel. What does that mean?

It means place the files in the specified directories and re-complie the kernel.

Or just specified "ati" or "radeaon" or "vesa" generic driver, available in every distro, to get the video card running. You only need to go into compiling the kernel if you have a high end video card that costs more than the mobo, cpu, ram and hard disk put together.

Alternatively choose a current Linux with better support for your ati card.

Where do I specify that? Or, how do I recompile the kernel? (All of the recompiling the kernel tutorials I've found tell me things in Linux lingo that I don't understand.)

Hi adanedhel728,

What Ati card do you have? What Linux distribution are you using for what architecture? Ok, I did not see that you had posted your computer specs:
AMD Turion 64 x2 1.6 GHZ, ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 256 mb on SimplyMEPIS Linux

You should visit the Mepis hardware support forum for video here to get help with your situation. Join that forum and either search for your video card or ask a question there for help.

I have a lot of people asking me that, so I think I'm going to put my specs in my sig

I'm using an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 256 mb with SimplyMEPIS.

Your Linux desktop is controlled by xorg program. Its configuration is always stored in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

If thing doesn't work out the log file is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

The section that control the video looks like this (from my Mepis)
Code:
Section "Device"
  Identifier "Card0"
  Driver "nv"
  BoardName "unknown"
I run a XFX Geforce 7600GT and Ubuntu selected "nv" driver. "vesa" also run successfully in this PC.
