VNC is not a secure way to connect to your linux server, you can run VNC over an SSH connection, here is how: Secure VNC using SSH.

Did the sudo apt-get install vncserver command work without error? If not, what error did the command generate.

On which platfrom were you installing the VNC server:
1) media pc (and what OS does it run?)
2) Ubuntu

From my take on what you want to do, it sounds like the vncserver should be installed on the media pc - again, what OS is it? The Ubuntu platform would probably need the vnc client installed.

Please read Wikipedia about the client and server for VNC here.

Are media xp and ubuntu on the same disk?

On second thought, to remote access your media pc - where do you plan to access it from, i.e. where is your desktop pc located (at work)? If the answer is yes, you would need to have the vncclient installed at work, and if it is available, your would need to use the putty ssh to access through vnc facilities to your ubuntu.

I presume you attempted to install the vncserver on your ubuntu OS - correct? Since it is dual-boot, you would not be able to access your xp since your ubuntu (at home I presume) would be booted and running.

believe it or not the media pc is about 5 foot from my desktop pc, the only reason I want to remote access it is that the media pc is hooked up to lcd tv, and the few occasions I wanted to access it hubby is playing his ps2 on it. Could I just use a cable solution would that be any easier

Also I dont want to access xp just ubuntu

I'm not a networking expert, but I suspect that a cable between them would constitute a LAN, and need network configuration between the two involving a lot of detail. You could post over in the networking forum here at TSG for help in that kind of a project and tell them what OSes you want to rig together on a LAN.

Please read the vnc information in the Unofficial Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) Starter Guide to see if it will help.
