Just recently, and out of nowhere, all sounds have been reduced to little or nothing but a distorted blur. To add insult to injury, there is a constant high pitched buzzing noise as well.

All was working fine up until very recently, maybe a day or 2 ago. Any ideas?

I've tried switching from ALSA to OSS to ALC882 with no results

I've also tried restarting, shutting down, and unplugging the computer... no luck

It's just not the same without sound!

Hi Redenbacher,

How old is your system? Do you have a Soundblaster card? If you know what audio drivers are installed, perhaps there are specific drivers for your audio card that need to be reinstalled.

However, since you say that this started to happen about 2 days ago - it may be that your audio card has stb'd and you may need a new one.

Or, if you know how to open up your case, check to see if the audio card has become loose - it may just need reseating.

Otherwise, your system speakers may have stb'd.

May be time to take it to ye olde computer shoppe and get it inspected.

Google can also help to find an audio forum which may have some answers regarding what may be causing your high pitched buzzing noise.

My system is about a year old, the sound card is on board an ASUS P5LD2 so I can't reseat it.

Headphones make the same noise, so the speakers couldn't have died.

Hmmmm... I'll try googling it and see what else I can come up with. I'll be damned if I can't fix it myself!!! lol

If you're using gnome, look under the Administration menu for sounds. You should be able to select the driver and device to use there and be able to test them.

If KDE, go to Sounds & Multimedia, and check that the settings are correct there.

Also, via Synaptic, I'd try to un/re-install your sound architecture. Try ALSA, then OSS if that fails. I do know both can cause conflicts.

Ah hah! Reinstalled all the ALSA packages, shut down and upon starting back up, I have sound again! No buzzing either. Thanks a ton!

Now running in to the same problem, only I have sound. The high pitched constant buzzing noise is back, and reinstalling the ALSA packages didn't work

It's not the speakers, I've tried both audio jacks on my box. I would assume the integrated card has stb'd? That would be disappointing. Any ideas of what else it could be? Or, if that is the case, what are some good inexpensive sound cards you'd recommend?
