Is it ok to install Ubuntu on my old computer?
My sister gave me her old computer. It's a Windows ME computer and no one is using it.It's just collecting dust. My friend at school is thinking about installing Ubuntu on his laptop. I have a few blank cds at my house and I'm really thinking about downloading Ubuntu.I've been hearing good things about.I'm tired of having the blue screen of death on my old computer. It happens a lot. Is it ok to install Ubuntu on my old computer? Is Ubuntu better than Windows ME?

Ubuntu will work on very old machines, hopefully it will not install Compiz Fusion if the machine is very old, cause it will not run very well until you remove it. But give it a shot. I know alot of people that use older machines to test Linux on.

The newest version of Ubuntu comes with Compiz Fusion, but will only run it if you have the system resources for it. Other then that some older hardware has compatibility problems but the site in my Sig will help a lot with those. Good Luck and welcome to the Linux Train. As a gift you get to download Ubuntu for free.

P.S. Gutsy is released the 18th so go ahead and get it now

I actually downloaded the RC of Gutsy X386 and X64. It looks pretty good, some of the changes made from Feisty are pretty nice. I noticed where you can change the visual settings. I wasn't sure how they were going to set it up but it seems pretty nice.

The RC is giving me errors on install, so you might want to wait for the full release in 3 days.

Right when it tries to write the files to the partition it throws an error saying "Can not Unmount Assistant...something." I am going to submit the problems i am having at the Ubuntu Forums. so you don't have to research the problem. I don't want to hi-jack the post =)

The most important things are
(a) How much RAM (memory) do you have? and
(b) How big is your hard drive?

To install from the LiveCD takes up more RAM. The AlternativeCD needs less.

Ubuntu will rum on 256Mb but it will be a bit slow. There are ways around this e.g. by using Xubuntu (Xfce based) rather than Ubuntu (Gnome based)

I don't know because My sister didn't give me the plugs for the computer.I'll get the plugs this weekend. The last time I was on that computer I saw about 512MB and I think it had 12GB left on the hard drive.
