Programmer needs help with Slackware 12
I have been programming a lot of years and am a total newbie with Linux. I have installed Slackware 12 and when I boot up all I get is a script screen. I can read mail and that is about it. Does this thing have a graphic interface. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate with VMware workstation 6 testing Slackware 12 as a guest. My goal is to get rid of windows and just use Slackware 12 instead. I know I have a good install but I need some basic help to get me going. I have run all kinds of scripts all my life so I don't mind doing that. Anyway I'm not going to give any money here until I see if you can help me with the
basics of Slackware 12.

Try this command at root console
Code:
kdm
In a standard Linux the command to get a graphic desktop is "startx" which will work in most case but Slackware 12 has arranged it to go to Xterm. "kdm" will fire up the KDE desktop and "gdm" similarly for Gnome desktop. "kdm" works in my Slackware 12. Previous versions boot you directly to desktop but that is configurable.
