fan control
Hi, I have just installed Ubuntu 7.04 and after a while the fan kicks in to cool down the system. The trouble is, it doesn't turn off and it gets irritating after a while! Is there a way to control when the fan runs, i.e. turn on at 55 degrees and off at 40 degrees?

Cheers,
CB

Hi, thanks for the reply, but i don't think that program works with linux on reading the FAQ page, and on downloading it.

Cheers,

Yes, SpeedFan is a very nice, lightweight app for Windows, but not Linux.

For Ubuntu, you need to install the following packages: lm-sensors
Use Synaptic Package Manager to do so, or issue the following command:
$ sudo apt-get install lm-sensors

See Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) Starter Guide.
Use your browser's Find in This page search: fan
which will shed some light on installing, monitoring and controlling fan speeds.

Hi guys, as my computer is a Dell, I think I need to use i8kutils. I found this page here which might be useful to other people, and there is some other stuff on there too.
http://pykeylogger.sourceforge.net/w...nd_Fan_Sensors

Hi CB,

The link to http://pykeylogger.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php is to a keylogger which has nothing to do with fan control, however, the information that i8kutils is a utility package that applies to fan control for the Dell Inspiron and Latitude laptops is correct - i.e. no one will be able to download it from the link you gave, and the keylogger will not help the problem.

P.S. The correct formation of urls is: "textinfo" whereas you used "http://wherevertext info

Sorry, just copied and pasted the link. So does the link
http://pykeylogger.sourceforge.net/w...nd_Fan_Sensors
actually contain the correct information or have I installed something potentially dangerous?

CB

Hi CB,

Now that you have the correct link, you appear to be ok. If you can edit the previous message to correct the link - all will be fine!

fans that dont drop into an idol mode with out a good reason
fans that dont drop into an idol mode usually have a good reason
a dirty power supply
or dusty mouther board
I saw a pc with a bad heat sensor race continually even when the fan was replaced.
make sure that your pc is clean when a fan starts to run on and on.
and make shore that the pc is in a well ventilated space and not in a sealed cabinet.
make shore that you dont have books or magazines against your pc case because wood is a naturel insulator.
and if you are a collage student take your underwear of the top of the pc case.
