Solved: Server OS?
I'm pretty new to linux,I'll be taking some classes at my school in the next 3 to 4 months.Anyway I was wondering which distro would be best or good for building a home server,music/videos/software/homework-files.I've a old system(rarely used) Pentium D 2.4GHz,1GB RAM,400Watt PSU,ASUS motherboard,80GB HDD.I do have a copy of Slackware 10.5? laying around here that I've never used, plus I heard that this isn't the most newbie friendly distro? At any rate advice would be appreciated.

Try Ubuntu (Note: you can download 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon as of Oct 18, 2007) at http://shipit.ubuntu.com or http://shipit.kubuntu.org and also get 1-3 free CDs sent to you via snail mail (6-10 weeks delivery). They are currently taking pre-orders. Has lots of newer features like Compiz Fusion UI default.

Otherwise, Fiesty Fawn (7.04) and other Linuxes can be downloaded from here.

See Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) Starter Guide.

P.S. By the title of your thread, do you plan to have a web server funtionality, like Apache, etc.? Or, just a desktop with your own use/access? The reason I ask is that where web servers are concerned, you need to be cognizant of security in which case you can search this forum for my other posts a couple of which are very good security guides for locking down your security.

Not sure why people screw around with Fedora when you can use White Box or CentOS.

I use Fedora for servers I build mainly because I started out building servers based on RedHat 7.2 and then RedHat 9. The last server I built was based on Fedora Core 2 and I'm planning one using FC7.

To be honest, I tend to build the server components from source *anyway* so I'm really distro independent when it comes to the servers I build.

Peace...
