mplayer and other video out issues
I frequently have to log off and on again to get mplayer and other accelerated applications to work. It seems to occur when one application "acts up" and needs to be killed. Other times, I don't know what causes the problem.

I think maybe the application that uses the video device does not clean up properly and keeps a lock on it, but I don't know for sure. I just ran kmplayer from the command line to see if I could get any information but it just ran mplayer but wouldn't do anything else and mplayer didn't report any problems.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to avoid log offs to fix it?

It's not just mplayer either, gxine does the same exact thing; no error messages either at the command prompt. It just locks at the command prompt.

Maybe its just the 64-bit implementations you are using, or is it 32-bit on a 64-bit processor with 32-bit libraries?

I have no problems with 32-bit on my 32-bit processor P4 3.2Hz processor with Ubuntu 7.04 Fiesty Fawn.

Check your codecs, i.e. are they 32-bit implementations or 64-bit?

I've had problems. Most of the time it's selecting the proper out device within the program you're running.

With MPlayer, it's in the configuration menus. There's more info. at the website:

The MPlayer plugin for FireFox causes the problem every time it crashes.

For the record:
I avoid logging off now by killing the offending process and that fixes the problem.

Not a big deal.
