ubuntu problems
I have loaded ubuntu 6.06 on my hard drive - the drive was wiped clean prior to loading Linux. There is nothing else on the drive beside ubuntu. The resulting load will access the Web OK but I can't get it to load e-mail, either to send or receive messages. Also, I click on an icon on the desktop and it says it can't "Display (the name of the icon)" - why not??
I have two home grown desktop computers so can switch between them while running so any fixes I might get via e-mail on the Windows XP Pro machine I can immediately switch to the Linux machine and give em a shot.
Anyhow, I sure would like to know why the mail function doesn't wanna work and of course why the clicking on the icon (especially the little foot) will not display.
Anyone willing to give this a try I am very grateful.
By the way, for what it's worth, I'm 87 and in poor health so may not get to the computers as soon as I would like so if there is a delay between receiving an answer and my reply, why, well, that's the answer - OK?
Thanks a lot for anyone's help.............

LLW

6.06 is June last year, it's October 07 vintage now.

Are you using Evolution to download email and send it? Your ISP should have a mail account for you, and told you to use an address like pop.bitbucket.net

I don't know about the Icon, it may be it points to some graphic file you moved or deleted. It'd be obvious if I could check it out, but not from your problem description.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Yes, I'm usinf Evolution as it comes on the disk. As the setup progressed it asked for the ISP - which is leewintl@att.net - which I entered in the approprate window - that's what makes this perplexing to me. It also asked the same question for receiving mail and of course I entered the necessary info. I am wondering how (click by click) how I can return to this area and check what is in the window - is this possible? I'd like to trace the "evolution" of my information as it was requested in the progress of loading the program. There must be something I could do to break this log jam but I have no idea of how to look for it. There is something that is keeping the path from my modem to the e-mail open but I am not familiar enough with ubuntu Linux to try to trace the path to see what is wrong. This is an area in which I could sure use to help.
As to the icon not responding - and this means any and every icon that is supposed to bring up the requested program - it gives me the same answer - it "couldn't be dislpayed."
As I said in the original problem question, this is in response to my clicking on an icon with the little foot.
Again, thanks for the response.........

HI A Buckeye,

RobLinux mentioned an example, pop.bitbuket.net, and your ISP's pop mail server is probably something more like pop.att.net rather than the email address you gave the Evolution configuration setup.

Try this webpage for help. Note the phone number reading the replies, Posted by: rewakm and make the call. They may be able to help you or direct you to where you can get help.

I've had a look for the "Little Foot" which is the GNOME logo on Ubuntu 7.10 and I can't imagine what it is you're clicking on. So no idea about that one.

That's correct, it's the GNOME icon that I am clicking on. It is any file that I have downloaded or otherwise have an interest that has put that little foot (icon) on the tabletop that I click on and get the message "Can't display (what ever the name of the file is)" - whay can't I display it (or better still, whay can't the computer display it as everything needed for the dispaly, i.e., monitor etc., is functioning OK. Thatere is a bottle neck of some nature that I am not familiar enough with ubuntu to try to locate it or how to go about trying to find it. That "road block" is what I need to find and how to go about it.

Thanks
A Buckeye

Check permissions, open a terminal up.

find . -type d -maxdepth 2 ls

Check your perms look like
4 2 drwxr-xr-x 44 rob users 2352 Nov 19 16:22 .
75 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 rob users 240 Nov 19 16:22 ./.qt
5 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 rob users 48 Nov 3 12:19 ./bin
3204 0 drwxr-xr-x 6 rob users 168 Nov 10 04:04 ./dos
4137 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 rob users 72 Nov 10 03:42 ./dos/DOC
181 1 drwx------ 2 rob users 520 Nov 10 03:30 ./dos/VELIKIYE
3736 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 rob users 96 Nov 10 03:12 ./dos/TOOLS

.
.
.
669 0 drwx------ 2 rob users 48 Nov 3 12:24 ./.gnome2_private

drwx means the owner has read write & search permssion. Sometimes new users alter them accidentally and then have odd problems.
