First steps with Linux
Hi
I have an old computer to play with and would like to find out what Linux is like.
Could anyone advise me on the best version to start on and where I can download it?
regards
phil

Without the specs of the computer it's a stab in the dark.
I would suggest trying PC Linux 2007 or Elive Gem - maybe Simply Mepis.
I've had more luck with PCLos on older computers than anything else followed by Elive.
And it's my experience that two seemingly identical computers might need two completely different operating systems to run properly.
So grab a couple of them and try it - if one doesn't work try the other.

Hi CouchMaster
The computer in question is a generic using a celeron processor running at 1100mhz.
Does this change your advice?

phil

If you have say, 256m of ram, I'd think that you probably could run just about any Linux OS you wanted. PC Linux is the current #1 ranked OS and is an excellent choice - as is all of the Ubuntu family.

Hi CouchMaster
I have sent off for the PC Linux 2007, thanks for the advice.
If it all goes pear shaped I am sure I will be looking for further help.
regards
phil
