I imagine most people here know this, but Wal-Mart has this new computer called the Everex that runs gOS. Well, anyway, the reason I'm posting here is because I'm wondering what people here think about this. I'm thinking of getting this just because it's a cheap computer. I know it runs on a off brand CPU and doesn't have much RAM, but I was thinking it might be useful to have a second computer, in spite of this. Particularly, I'm thinking of connecting this to my TV and using it primarily as a Media computer.

I'm also wondering if it might be easy or difficult to uninstall gOS and install Ubuntu or SuSE. Sometime in the future, I might even install a version of Windows, but is that possible?

So, is this a good idea, or is this computer too weak or unreliable? And I know that that's really a relative question, but I was still wondering if I could get some thoughts on it.

The Linux forums, Ubuntu in particular, say it's very good. gOS is Ubuntu by the way, with the E17 desktop - read about it here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=617411

There's also a gOS development board, CPU+Mobo for $60, (1GB RAM about $20 extra).

The box is not designed for M$ Vista, you should not plan on installing Windows.

The Via C7 stuff should work fine with most Linux distros, in past I tried out a low power Via C3 system, aiming for quiet Internet GW / LAN server machine. gOS may have some tweaks, and possibly X related customisations from standard Ubuntu distro.

If you do buy that machine, you have to realise it's "cheap and cheerful", and I would give the gOS a go, until you know hardware hacks have reached upstream.

Not too complimentary about gOS as dude is missing somethings he likes, but it does mention the X driver stuff that I vaguely remembered, but wasn't sure enough to go into factual detail. KDE ran fine once he got it installed however.
