Wanting to try Linux
I have an old Compaq with only 64 mbr I don't have the disks to reload WindowsME back on it. so I thought I would try Linux. Can someone give me a link to a bootable program that will work. I have heard of DSL Linux programs. Is this a choice?

Try Puppy Linux, it works on $100 PCs with small RAM.

Knoppix. You can boot it off the CD and run it from there. I like it a lot.

The best I have found yet is PCLinuxOS-2007

In my opinion it has moved ahead of Ubuntu and others.

Download and run live if you like it you can install later.

I wouldn't bother with Knoppix or PCLinuxOS on a PC with 64MB of RAM.

Note the tiny amount of memory available. Knoppix will run slowly on such a system. I cannot speak to PCLinuxOS, but KDE will crawl on 64megs.

When giving advice to people with limited machines, don't forget they are not going to be able to run normal distros very well or at all.

To the original poster:
Get more memory if at all possible. Just because you can run an OS on 64MB does not make it a good idea. Millions of computers with more RAM than that are scrapped worldwide, so keep an eye out for leftovers.

Damn Small or Puppy will function properly on that sort of hardware without additional memory. That's why they are frequently recommended.

PCLinuxOS will not run even LiveCD with 64MB RAM, let alone install.
But it is the best for us newbies.
