Need opinions
I have Linux Kubuntu 7.10 and I want to install it. Should I install it on a computer or laptop where linux can pick up most or all the drivers? I will be a first time user to Linux so I don't want to start with problems (well I wouldn't mind but I don't have the time since i started second semester). Would a regular custom built computer give me problems with drivers? Do I have to look for a few? Opinions and suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

My opinion?

Ubuntu. Of all the linux/unix forums (for help), I think http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php has the most activity.

New build vs. off-the-shelf shouldn't pose any more problems. I've been in the process of closing the 'Windows' since just before Christmas, but that's with 3 laptops, 2 desktops (1 new build), and a partridge in a pear tree.

Gettin' it online should only take a few minutes post install with a hardwire. Wireless only a little wire longer, although 1 laptop did take me 3 days to configure. And 3 more to do it again, after wipin' the config by doin' a distro upgrade

Ubuntu - that's my opinion.

A customize computer can give you a problem because all the hardware are completely differen and Ubuntu may not support most of it. Try to check if the computer you want to buy pass all the hardware compability with the linux before buying it if you want to have linux install.

I have an Old IBM laptop lying around. And it is slow in running XP. Would I have any problems with drivers when installing kubuntu on it?

Run the live cd, that's the best way to know. The most common problems in ubuntu are afaik wireless and sound. You can fix both. I would recommend installing on a Desktop PC though, seeing that it's way easier to solve your problems with and eth connection (drivers downloading and such).

I have a desktop PC that is an IBM. Windows pretty much seemed to take care of everything when it was installing. I just had to install the modem. Kubuntu would act the same way? Or as you mention sound?

I third that decision. Live CD is the best way to know.

I'd suggest installing on the desktop first, once you're ready to take the plunge. A lot of drivers for lots of hardware are available, natively and has fixes on the forums. I've never had a problem with Ubuntu, or any other Linux distro recognizing my wired NIC.

...YES!, liveCD should do the trick if you want to check your working drivers.

if your OLD IBM LAPTOP can run WIN XP, it might as well work with LINUX.

distros I've tried having no single problem on my OLD machine...
