Linuxbox Network Question
Hi there,

I'm an oldschool Mud fan, and I used to run one on Wolfpaw.net. I have since shut it down and want to start rebuilding it again. What I need to do is setup a linuxbox that I have onto my network, start the mud up, and then configure it to allow my windows computer to use Zmud and log into the game and begin rebuilding it from there.

I honestly haven't used linux except for the shell's provided by mud hosters, I can do basic things, and am only a novice user. I am very good at the internal administration of the mud and its commands, its just using linux and c++ that I am uneducated with.

Some specs.

- WinXP, 250gig HDD, 5 gigs of ram, P4 3.0Ghz
- Linux = 120gig HDD, 512 ram, unsure on the processor.
- Verizon FIOS online using their 4 port router.
- both computers have an ethernet card installed(not sure if the linux one is configured)

I currently have 4 computers connected to the router. I want to add the linuxbox by disconnecting one of the already connected, and adding in a hub to allow for 5 total computers to be on the LAN.

Does this seem feasible? And if so, how would I go about configuring the Linuxbox to allow for such actions?

Also there are two other options I was considering, I could skip the hub use and connect the linuxbox directly to my windows box using 2 ethernet cards in the windows box and 1 in the linux, or I could try and activate the FIOS router's wireless lan, and buy a wireless card for the linuxbox.

What is the easiest way to do any of this?

Yes it's feasible.

I should start by using a wired connection. Try downloading Live CD's like Ubuntu, PCLOS or OpenSuSE, and running those, see if there's MUD server versions available as packages. But building from source will probably be much easier than you expect. If you MUD project recommend Debian (or FreeBSD) as the server OS then just give it a try, you're presumbably not afraid of logging in in textmode with something like putty from 'doze.

The OS installer will default to using DHCP to connect to the hub. In most cases it'll recognise all of the important hardware and configure it very simply.

Thanks for the reply. I do have a Mud code already, and I have the linuxbox with Red Hat 9.0 installed on it. I have just never used it. I know my mud code works fine since it worked both in Cygwin and in the linuxshell from the mud hoster I used before.

I do also have Putty, and enjoy using it since its easy to use

Would you try and add the linuxbox to the server via a hub, or would you just connect the linuxbox and windowbox using ethernet cards?
