How to recover the GUI from the command prompt in *buntu.

From the command prompt input
Quote:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This will start a text-based wizard. Answer any questions you can. If there are questions you can't then go with the given default answer. If at first you don't succeed than try again. If all else fails choose VESA as the graphics mode - this is lowest common denominator stuff and should work.

How to download and install the correct Nvidia or ATI driver in *buntu

One of the easiest ways is to use Albert Milone's script called "Envy". It is available from here: http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

It works for MANY people but NOT ALL.

Hi into9rod,

I, too, have an ATI radeon X300 video card. I have never had to install video drivers for Ubuntu (Dapper, Fiesty, Gutsy), and the Live CDs have always just worked with the default video drivers.

I tried installing the optional video drivers with Ultimate Ubuntu 1.4 Live CD (a Fiesty Ubuntu knockoff), but that did not work, so the next and every subsequent time, I deferred on the optional installation of video drivers.

Try optional driver installs in a Live CD environment so you know it works or not before installing onto disk.

Use:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

if you want to skip most of the questions. I'm pretty sure you can make it work that way as well. When installing video drivers I recommend you use the restricted drivers from your repository. Works everytime for me.

Make sure there is NO SPACE in xserver-xorg. It isn't xserver (space)-xorg.
