Is the device mounted on instances when it does not play?

256 M ram I believe is sufficient/1.6G is sufficient/HD doesn't matter.

What type of ram do you have? I have many extra sticks laying around here, for postage.

Fedora doesn't (didn't) have non-free stuff installed "out-of-the-box".
You would have had to enable non-free repositories to get mp3 and DVD to play.

Any reason you're sticking with an older distro?

In Ubuntu (I'm sure Fedora is similar), system/administration/software sources/(maybe 'repository' would be in the filepath somewhere...

Ubuntu then brings up a window with native software (ubuntu) download options, third party download options, update options, etc.

This I think would be your source for recognizing the hardware, which seems to be the problem.

Codecs-downloading issues would also be addressed through this configuration...

Look also for tools or accessories, for a disk usage tool, to show free space...

For legal reasons, no. At least not in North America.

Heres how to add and get more
http://www.fedorafaq.org/

There is a couple of things to do to add and use repositories.
