Ubuntu on Toshiba
Hey, can anyone help...

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro 440CDT
Existing OS: Windows 95
Ubuntu OS: Ubuntu 7.10
Method: Boot from CD

Error:
EIP: [<c02f1f2b>] schedule+0x26b/0x890 SS:ESP 0068:c03dfadc
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task

(There are numbers before both errors however they change every boot)

This happens every time I try to install or run Ubuntu on my computer. Can you help me?

Did you download the .iso from the net? If you burnt the disk at high speed it could have errors , try burning at a lower speed.

Thank you islandguy for the suggestion but there is no change... After your post I tried burning it at 4x (as opposed to 24x) and I get the same error back.

You may need to try another distro. Something more compatible with older hardware.

Vector Linux
Puppy

Funny you should say that, RootbeaR... Just five minutes before reading your post I was telling my girlfriend that I think my Toshiba may be too old for Ubuntu to run... Thank you for reaffirming my suspicions.

Try Damn Small Linux. It worked very well on my Portege 3010CT, the DSL forums are helpful,
and there are boot floppies if you cannot install from CD. I used a CF card in an IDE adapter for a silent, long-running machine.
